South Fayette has a great deal of history behind the community.
It has been documented that George Washington owned a tract of land in South Fayette in the 1700s, and today that tract of land includes the neighborhood of Hickory Heights.
Prior to becoming South Fayette, the township went by the name of Fayette Township. At that time, it included North Fayette Township as well before being divided in the mid 1800s.
